For example, to lift the heavy box, one must apply an upward force to it over a certain distance if the box needs to be lifted only a little bit, less work is done than if the box needs to be lifted high. The concept of work in physics is similar work in this context is defined as the product of the force applied to an object and the distance that the object is displaced (moved). We typically think of work as something that involves an expenditure of effort-for instance, lifting a heavy box might be referred to as hard work. Thus, by virtue of the fact that cos 90° is zero, the scalar product of any two perpendicular vectors is zero. Let's insert the angle 90° into the formula. The formula for the scalar product of these vectors is the following, which was derived earlier. Solution: Consider any two vectors A and B where the angle between them is 90° (thus making them perpendicular). Practice Problem: Show that the scalar product of two perpendicular vectors is always zero. This is compared with the magnitude of p, which is about 90.1 newton seconds. Thus, the component of the momentum in the direction of 4 x + 3 y is 85 newton seconds (the corresponding vector would be 85 b newton seconds). Now calculate the scalar product of p and b: To find the component of the momentum in the direction of the vector 4 x + 3 y, we need to calculate the scalar product of p and the unit vector corresponding to 4 x + 3 y (we'll call this vector B). Solution: First, let's calculate the momentum p of the projectile. What is the component of the projectile's momentum in the direction of 4 x + 3 y? Practice Problem: A projectile of mass 5 kilograms has a velocity 10 x + 15 y meters per second. Let's use the properties of trigonometric functions (specifically, addition formulas) to simplify the result. We'll calculate the scalar product of these two vectors as follows. Let's write both a and b in terms of their component parts in the x and y directions (corresponding to the x and y unit vectors, respectively). Notice that we have defined two angles: the angle ? between a and b, and ? between a and the x-axis. We'll draw two arbitrary unit vectors as shown below. We need to now prove that this result is the same as the scalar product of a and b. Using right triangle trigonometry, we see that the component of a in the direction of b is cos ? (the magnitude, or "length," of a is unity). Note that the unit vector a is composed of a component vector in the direction of b and a component vector perpendicular to the direction of b. Note that we have defined the angle between the vectors as ?. Now, let's consider these two unit vectors by way of the diagram below. We can factor out the magnitudes of A and B ( A and B, respectively) and write the scalar product in terms of these magnitudes and the scalar product of two corresponding unit vectors, a and b, which are in the directions of A and B, respectively. (We call this the scalar product because the product is a scalar rather than a vector.) Given two vectors A = a 1 x + a 2 y and B = b 1 x + b 2 y, the scalar product A ? B is the following: But what if we want to calculate the component of some vector in the direction of another arbitrary vector? To this end, we define the scalar product (also called the dot product) of two vectors. We saw some of this in our earlier study of vectors in relation to unit vectors: we are able to break down a vector such as 3 x + 2 y into its component parts: 3 x (a vector of magnitude 3 in the x direction) and 2 y (a vector of magnitude 2 in the y direction). In some physics problems or situations, the ability to calculate the component of one vector in the direction of another is helpful. O Calculate the work involved in moving objects from one location to another O Understand the concept of work in the context of physics O Recognize and use the scalar product of two vectors We start by defining the scalar product of two vectors, which is an integral part of the definition of work, and then turn to defining and using the concept of work to solve problems. In physics, work is the amount of energy required to perform a given task (such as moving an object from one point to another).

Of the three, mesh-lined external pockets, the zippered chest pocket is a bit bigger than a phone, and the zippered hand pockets each have space for drying out a winter glove. Two big, mesh stuff-it inside pockets hold climbing skins. The adjustable hood (one cord, in back) has a slight, flexible brim and elasticized opening for a close fit, but I also easily layered it over a heavyweight balaclava and under a shell hood. The athletic fit (read: not overly wide) leaves room to layer a vest underneath, and just feels and looks good. Follow my adventures on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube. Hi, I’m Michael Lanza, creator of The Big Outside, which has made several top outdoors blog lists. A breathable, polyester stretch-mesh lining (same as in OR’s Superlayer Jacket) wicks moisture from the inside when you’re producing excess heat that moisture passes through the Alpha insulation and the breathable and highly durable, weather-resistant, nylon stretch-woven shell on the exterior. Water-resistant, highly compressible, Polartec Alpha Active synthetic insulation breathes well while trapping warmth. On long days of alternating between sweating and rapidly cooling down in sub-freezing temperatures, that’s a game changer.Ī few components explain the Uberlayer’s performance. So I pulled the Uberlayer on over a middle layer (that had also gotten damp on the climb) for the 20-minute descent by the time I reached my car, my base and middle layers were as dry as when I put them on that morning. One example: After ski touring steadily uphill for more than an hour in Idaho’s Boise Mountains, on a mostly sunny day around 20° F with some wind-breaking trail at times-I reached the top of my climb with a wet shirt. Sign up for my FREE email newsletter now. But the secondary benefit is how this jacket traps heat to keep you from getting chilled after you’ve sweated hard (most likely not wearing the Uberlayer, but in shirtsleeves when pushing hard uphill), while it moves moisture out so efficiently that wearing it over a sweaty base layer allows your body heat to dry out that base layer quickly.įind your next adventure in your Inbox. In cold temps, on the go, this jacket lived on my back. The first and most obvious measure-and benefit-of puffy jackets with breathable insulation is how much time you spend wearing them rather than carrying them in your pack. I wore OR’s new Uberlayer Hooded Jacket for numerous days of backcountry skiing-including, at times, as an outer layer while skinning uphill-and as a middle layer skiing downhill both in the backcountry and for hours at a resort And I wore it in temperatures ranging from around freezing to wind chills below zero Fahrenheit, and came away convinced this is a jacket you could legitimately use into the backcountry every month of the year. But in an increasingly crowded field, some jackets still rise above. Made by Outdoor research, this Jackets product comes in a range of sizes and colours, and comes complete with everything you’ll need. The explosion in breathable-insulation garments has changed the way we think about insulation in the backcountry. Polartec Alpha Active Insulation is layered between a polyester mesh lining and a highly breathable nylon shell making the UberLayer a backcountry chameleon. The ingenious design dumps excess heat when you are on the move, but holds it in during downtime. In 2020, WeChat’s social commerce venture raked in $240 billion.Īlibaba’s UC browser was deleted from app stores by Chinese regulators as part of Beijing’s crackdown on tech companies. WeChat, with over one billion users, moved into the eCommerce space in 2017, collaborating with Walmart and Starbucks. Both technology giants have evolved over the years, and today offer pretty much the same services. Together, Alipay and WeChat Pay have 90 percent of China’s digital payments market.Īlibaba started as an eCommerce platform, which is still its main business, whereas Tencent launched its primary business as a social media and gaming platform. Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba, competes with WeChat Pay with its own app, Alipay. This represented an increase of 25 million users from September 2012. Opera Mini was derived from the Opera web browser for personal computers, which has been publicly available since 1996. Opera Mini was originally intended for use on mobile phones not capable of running a conventional Web browser. It was introduced on 10 August 2005, as a pilot project in cooperation with the Norwegian television station TV 2, and only available to TV 2 customers.Ī beta version was made available in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland on 20 October 2005. After the final version was launched in Germany on 10 November 2005, and quietly released to all countries through the Opera Mini website in December, the browser was officially launched worldwide on 24 January 2006. It included new features such as the ability to download files, new custom skins, more search engine options on the built-in search bar, a speed dial option, new search engines, and improved navigation. On 1 November 2006, Opera Mini 3 beta introduced secure browsing, RSS feeds, photo uploading and content folding into its list of features and capabilities. Content folding works by folding long lists such as navigation bars into a single line that can be expanded as needed. A second beta was released on 22 November, and on 28 November, the final version of Opera Mini 3 was released. On 7 November 2007, Opera Mini 4 was released. #Send opera speed dial to opera touch code##SYNCHRONISATION OPERA OPERA TOUCH CODE#Īccording to Johan Schön, technical lead of Opera Mini development, the entire code was rewritten. I’ve missed Someday/Maybe. A ‘Someday/Maybe’ bucket is something that the Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology suggests you use to keep ideas. It’s a nice way to see your progress, and I found it motivating to try and ‘close’ pies by the end of the day. Things 3 introduces ‘Progress Pies,’ a neat visual representation of how close you are to completing a project. It’s a quick and easy way to schedule dates when writing tasks. Natural language processing is fun. You can use natural language for dates in both Things 3 and OmniFocus, but I’ve sometimes run into bugs while using this in OmniFocus. Tasks jump between Things on macOS and iOS in seconds. THINGS FOR MAC VS WUNDERLIST MANUALI often have to trigger manual syncing for OmniFocus on my iPhone to get it up to speed, and even syncing on macOS takes a while when booting. Things Cloud is fast. Cultured Code’s syncing engine is fast. Both Things and OmniFocus let you organize projects into folders (Things calls them ‘Areas’), but Things 3 goes further and gives you Headings, another way to visually organize projects into clear hierarchies. Things 3 isn’t just designed to look good. It’s colorful, spacious and full of delightful animations that make using the app a joy, something I could never say about the staid OmniFocus. Things 3 is delightful. Things has always been more beautiful than OmniFocus, and version three is the loveliest one of all. But from a long-time OmniFocus user’s perspective, I don’t think I’ll be switching back. I’ve been playing around with it since it was released two weeks ago, and there are things about it that I really like. That’s why it’s a big surprise that Things 3 is finally here. I’ve been using OmniFocus for the past four years and had given up on Things 3 ever shipping. Some people waited, others (like myself), moved on. This app has a history: it was first released in 2007, won an Apple Design Award in 2009, and Things 2 was released in 2012.Īt the end of 2013, Cultured Code announced that they were working on Things 3, and then … it never came. It gets pretty addicting, pretty quickly. Difficulty ramps up as new block types get introduced with different attributes. You’re locked into a fixed 7×7 grid to line up your blocks by sliding them around. Simply put, your job is to line up three like-colored blocks to collect points. This week we’re recommending Cubis Creatures. Try and get the highest score possible out of 140 tiles, eliminating small words to set up 7- and 8-letter blockbusters DAILY TOWER MODE : Stack up against other players on identical towers that change daily PUZZLE MODE : Every word you make adds a new row of letters Strategic word finding at its best. Sometimes, you may have to make words with a certain number of letters. You can also go diagonal, even if it means crossing streams. Except that when you find a word, it removes those letters, and sometimes others around it. #Spelltower tower mode high score full#I’ve decided to add a game to the list of Apps Of The Week posts in its own category. Like the original SpellTower, SpellTower+ is like those puzzles where you have to find words on a page full of letters. This app’s a bit of a cheat be causes it’s still invite only, but the developers are adding people fairly quickly, so if you’re interested in checking it out, expect a small, worthwhile wait.ĭownload The App From Their Website Game Of The Week: Cubis Creatures It’s pretty handy and I’ve been using it more and more over the course of the week. The app will also search your local filesystem and Dropbox folders. Instead of tossing up those results in Spotlight, Found hides off of the screen until you hit the control key twice. Found is similar, but it lets you search multiple Gmail accounts as well as Google Docs. It’s quite simply one of the best word games I’ve ever played.īack in 2009 we wrote a post about Precipitate, a plugin for Spotlight that lets users search their Google documents from directly in Spotlight. I can’t believe this universal app (works on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad) is only 0.99. The game has five modes and tremendous replay value. Letters fall in Tower mode, and you have to spell words before the tiles rise from the bottom of the screen to the top. If you like word games and Tetris-style games that have blocks falling from the roof, you’re going to want to check out Spell Tower. Quick aside, the VSCOCAM website is pretty fantastic too. If you need to increase your Hipster points to level 99, you’re gonna want to check this one out before all of your friends manage to get a hold of it. The app also integrates with Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and email, so sharing your pictures is a breeze. Tap to snap, and tap to apply filters based on a scale system. The really cool thing about this $0.99 application isn’t that it’s a camera app, but it’s all about its simple post processing methods. Yeah, yeah, VSCO CAM is another camera app for the iPhone. The music in BFR alternates between sounding like a speeded-up tape and an imported electronic toy - ultimately, these sounds earn the game points for quirkiness. The graphics are a bit plain for this generation of PlayStation games, and pop-up and build are an issue, of course, but it's not a horrible-looking game. In the two-player split-screen mode, you can make a bet and race against a friend. Make enough, and you can buy extra power-ups, better Tiras and Louies, and gain entrance into the next race. If you come in first, second, or third, you'll get cash. Using a feature available in a number of Japan-only horseracing video games, you can make your mount sprint ahead for short distances until it tires. (Just about everything is here, from power bombs to triple bombs plus, there are a few new items as well). In the single-player mode, you race against four opponents, drop or throw bombs at them, and use power-ups found along the way. #BOMBERMAN FANTASY RACE COVER SERIES#The bomb-chucking star of Hudson's genre-defying series and several of his friends have saddled up on Tiras (the worried-looking hippo-dinosaur hybrids) and Louies (the excitable kangaroo creatures introduced several games back), and they are competing in races for money and fame. Since Bomberman has long been known to play with fire and explosives, it was really just a matter of time before he added the track to his long list of vices. It hit Mega Man in the Japanese release Rockman: Battle & Chase and Square's cutesy-cutesy Chocobo in Chocobo Racing. The undeniable urge to race has struck many a platform- and puzzle-game hero. |
